Durga;s
odyssey in the ocean of music was flagged off from Sri Jayadurga
Temple, Varapuzha, way back in the year 1997, where she performed
her first ever classical music concert (Arrangettamm). Since then
she never looked back and today, after performing in more than 250
stage concerts, it has become a way of life for her to accept the
appreciations and blessings from people of all walks of life. Among
these she rates the first prize won in the music competition held
in the year 2000, in memory of Late Augustine Joseph, father of

Who is (Padmashree)Dr. Kattassery
Joseph Yesudas?

One of the greatest South Indian musicians of all times, was born in Fort Cochin, Kerala, India. His father Mr. Augustine Joseph Bagavathor, was a well known malayalam classical musician and stage actor of his time . His mother, Mrs. Alikkutty Joseph, devoted her time and energy in bringing up her children. In his childhood Yesudas had to face a great deal of hardships because of the meager financial resources of his parents. His father could recognize the boy’s musical talent at a very young age and decided to provide him musical education at any cost. Augustine Bhagavathor himself was his first music Guru. The boy was taught the fundamentals of Carnatic music at the tender age of five. Indian music world soon began to witness the appearance of a new bright star in the horizon. Later several music teachers in and around Cochin gave him valuable guidance he was seeking. It is his passion for music, hard work and dedication that created the musical legend we call Yesudas or more intimately "Dasettan".

Music came as divine grace and paternal inheritance to K.J.Yesudas, one of India’s foremost exponents of classical carnatic vocal music and leading playback singer in all-Indian languages. His classical concerts and film songs programs continue to captivate millions of listeners at home and abroad.

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas was born on January 10, 1940 in Fort Cochin, the ancient port city of Kerala. His father, Augustine Joseph was himself a well-known singer and stage actor who rode the Kerala stage like a colossus for over a quarter of a century. Eldest of the four sons and one daughter of the Joseph couple, Yesudas took to music at a very early age. His first Guru was his beloved father himself, who lovingly and painstakingly led little Yesudas through the basic precepts of Carnatic Music while he was hardly five years old. From there, the budding singer took lessons under several musical wizards in and around Cochin and nurtured his native talents with discipline, dedication and determination.

Yesudas is a reciepent of the Padmabhushan Award from the president of India and progress each day towards achieving musical knowledge through Classical Indian Music, Carnatic Music, Challenging Film and Independent compositions.

Role Models:

Shri.Narayana Guru’s great message, "One caste, One Religion and One God for all Humans", influenced young Yesudas in his dealings with his fellow men. He had his own heroes among the musicians too. Mohammed Rafi, Chembai Vaydhyanatha Bhagavathor and Bala Muralikrishna are the ones he admired the most.

Honors & Awards:

He has already sung more than 30,000 songs for thousands of Indian films in various languages. In 1965, he was invited by the Soviet Government to perform music concerts in various cities of the U.S.S.R. Yesudas is the recipient of The Kerala State Playback Singing Award 16 times since 1970. The President of India conferred on him the coveted title of Padmashree in 1973. After love, music is the second most "instrument" which touches the heart of every one, young and old alike. For love and music both have no barriers whatsoever and they transcend all boundaries. And when love and music mingle together and attain great heights because of the deep devotion of a musician then there is favour and applause not only men but of the creator himself who has gifted man with natural talents in music.

This very fact has been established time and again by many a great musician from time immemorial. One such great devotee of music is Jayachandran, a great playback singer the South India has seen and heard.

A contemporary of the all time great Yesudas, who has ruled the South Indian music world for more than 40 years, Jayachandran has carved his own niche and till now has around 15000 recorded songs to his credit in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. Though not a classical singer, Jayachandran with his sweet and romantic voice has made light film music memorable with his immortal love songs which always tingle young hearts.

The intensity of this mellifluous voice could do such justice to love and romantic songs that Jayachandran is considered to be the most suited and god-gifted singer of love songs. A great fan of Yesudas, Jayachandran is equally good to the former when it comes to popularity and fame, for Jayachandran, age too has not been a barrier over the years of singing. Indeed his voice is getting younger with the passing of time just as love and music are ageless and love songs are an immortal creation of god.

I personally have had the privilege to sing more than 3000 songs across a number of films in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. I have had the rare honour of conducting the music direction on many cassettes that include devotional ones for Ayappa, Jesus Christ, and Allah. Parallel to this, I have also done the same for a number of festival-based themes including Onam. Along with these interests, I also have my own cassette company called KMG Music. At the age of 37, I was bestowed the National Award in 1990 for my work in music. This was a crest in my career as it brought to fulfillment a number of aspirations and dreams of my family. Recognition came in other ways too as I won the Kerala state awards in 1989, 90 and 91 also. If you ask me which song established me in my career, definitely it was the song 'Nadroopini' in the Malayalam film 'His Highness Abdulla' This piece elevated my status to that of a singer of National repute. But the proverbial break-through in my career came through the song 'Kanneerpoovite' in the film 'Kiridom' which won me a number of state and private awards, and more importantly be finally taken seriously by the critics. By the grace of God, recently I am once again awarded the National award for the best play back singer for the song Chandu Pottum.. in the film "Vasanthe Lakhsmi Pinne Injanum".I have never yearned for a complicated life. I am quite a simple man at heart who enjoys the purity of life. My ambition is to be remembered by history as a classical vocalist who has contributed something worthwhile to the art of classical music - something that will be cherished for generations of music lovers and enthusiasts.
